Pencil Grip Lesson

Good pencil grip facilitates legibility, letter formation, speed and endurance. Holding a pencil or pen correctly requires strong finger and hand muscles and dexterity. A correct pencil grip will enable the writer to move the fingers, controlling the pencil or pen with efficient finger movements.

In this lesson, we will go over how to properly hold a pencil, and some tools and activities that can be used to help strengthen and practice a child's pencil grip.

1) Follow along with the video below and practice holding your pencil properly.

2) If you have a printer, print off the page below 'printing paper pdf'. If you do not have a printer, you can draw lines on a blank paper for your child to follow.

3) Task: Have your child write their name once on each of the four lines (ensure they are using proper pencil grip). If your child can not legibly write his/her own name, you can 'pre-write' their name on the lines in highlighter for your child to trace over with pencil.

4) After your child has written their name once on each line, they can draw a picture of themselves in the box above. They can use crayons to color their picture. Please encourage your child to draw with a purpose and not just scribble!

5) Take a picture of your child's work and upload it in Seesaw so that I can ensure your child has completed the task.

Here are some activities to help work on and strengthen pincer grasp: (allow your child to do one or all of these activities for an extended period of time)

- Have your child thread cheerios or beads on to a string/lace/pipe cleaner.

- Play with play dough by molding, squeezing, and manipulating with hands or tweezers. (This helps to strengthen muscles)

- Visual motor skills are also a big part of pencil grasp. This can be worked on by having your child follow/paint mazes, puzzles, lacing cards, and playing with blocks.

I have attached a website with more activity ideas for your child to practice and strengthen their pencil grip!

Go outside for 30 minutes today and enjoy the nice weather while it is still here!!

- Practice different movement skills (running, hopping, skipping, etc).

- Find objects that are all the colors of the rainbow

- Go for a walk around your community and pick of some garbage.

Your Name is Everything You Are!!

For this activity, you will need to go to and log in to your Seesaw Class App or the Seesaw website (whichever you prefer to use).

After logging in, you will see that there is an activity assigned that your child needs to complete!

Click on the activity and follow the instructions.

Have a great day & I will see you tomorrow morning!!

Remember: I join the Teams meeting each morning at 8:30am to help those who may have questions. Attendance isn't until 8:50. You do not need to have your child waiting for 20 minutes (unless you feel they benefit from it!).
